    Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently asked questions about reversing camera technology.

Often, reversing cameras are not one of the most talked-about cameras for trucks, with blind spot cameras often taking centre stage. However, reverse cameras are critical for heavy goods drivers and other commercial vehicles.

Reversing is one of the most dangerous manoeuvres a commercial driver can perform. Widely cited insurance claims data show that nearly 60% of all commercial vehicle accident claims involve reversing manoeuvres.

Additionally, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) also states that nearly a quarter of all deaths involving workplace transport occur during reversing. Many other reversing accidents do not result in injury but cause costly damage to vehicles, equipment, and premises.

Reversing cameras give drivers increased visibility of the rear of the vehicle, reducing blind spots and helping them manoeuvre more safely. This technoldy reduces the risk of accidents, damage, and near misses.

Yes. Many commercial vehicles already have camera systems installed but lack a dedicated rear camera. Nowadays, many camera systems have digital video recorders (DVRs) with multiple channels, allowing you to add cameras. Camera connectors for commercial vehicles also exist, allowing you to connect additional cameras. You can ask your hardware supplier or get in touch with us.

Yes. Reversing cameras can be retrofitted to vehicles that were not supplied with them as standard. This applies to both new and older commercial vehicles.

Not all commercial vehicles come with reversing cameras as standard, and for many models they remain an optional extra. In the EU, new vehicles sold under the General Safety Regulation (GSR II) must be equipped with a “reversing detection” system, typically delivered via a camera, parking sensors, or a combination of both.

However, in Great Britain the government is still considering whether to align fully with the EU’s GSR II requirements, so reversing cameras themselves are not currently mandated by law. Where a camera is not factory‑fitted, reversing camera systems can be retrofitted after the vehicle has been bought.

Although reversing cameras are not mandated under UK law, reverse-aid technology (such as reverse cameras) are often required or strongly recommended by other schemes and standards .

For example, standards such as the Fleet Operators Recognition Scheme (FORS) and Construction Logistics and Community Safety (CLOCS) require vehicles over 7.5 tonnes GVW to mitigate rear blind spots. Camera systems are a commonly used and accepted solution. They are also are strongly recommended even where not explicitly mandated at Bronze level.

Additionally, FORS states that vehicles must be equipped with an audible warning device that activates automatically when the vehicle is reversing, commonly specified as a white-noise or spoken-message alarm, with a manual override or mute function for night-time or noise-sensitive urban operation.

Lastly, the legal framework for Work-Related Road Risk (WRRR) mandates that employers take all “reasonably practicable” steps to ensure the health and safety of their employees and others who may be affected by their work activities. Under this duty, reversing aids, including cameras, are considered essential safety equipment, not optional extras, in many circumstances.

Some sites, including major infrastructure projects, apply their own vehicle safety requirements, which may include reversing cameras. It’s always important to check site access conditions, these include Thames Tideway, Lower Thames Crossing, Hinkley Point C, Battersea Power Station, Gatwick Expansion, Port Talbot, Havant Thicket etc

With our team of mobile technicians all over the UK, you don’t need to bring your vehicles to us; we come to your vehicles, whether they are still at the build centre, workshop, depot, or drivers’ homes.
