United Anodisers, based in Huddersfield, has been a leader in technical innovations within the anodising industry for the past 50 years, continually developing its products. As part of their business, they deliver some of their products directly to customers, relying on their fleet of HGVs (Heavy Goods Vehicles) to ensure efficient service.

Overview:

Use Case

In addition to providing anodising services, United Anodisers enhances customer service by delivering products using their small in-house fleet. These vehicles are specially designed with customisable load areas, allowing more products to be carried. The trailers are divided into sections, optimising the space for larger deliveries. Furthermore, they are equipped with specialised compartments that ensure materials are transported without surface damage, safeguarding the quality of their anodised products.

Upcoming Changes

Many of their customers are located within or around London or work on projects based within the M25. To reach these clients, timely and reliable deliveries are essential. For this, they use a specialised 26-tonne HGV. Since this vehicle was over 12 tonnes, it would be affected by the changes to the Direct Vision Standard. As part of their service, United Anodisers needed to ensure their fleet complied with the Direct Vision Standard (DVS), particularly with the number of deliveries they undertake for customers in and around the Greater London area.

To give context, from the 28th of October, all HGVs operating in Greater London must meet a minimum three-star DVS rating. Vehicles falling short of this requirement must be equipped with the Progressive Safe System, which includes specific safety measures designed to enhance the driver’s visibility and reduce blind spots.

The Progressive Safe System Contains:

United Anodisers were recommended to Nationwide Fleet Installations and contacted us to ensure their fleet was fully compliant. Time was of the essence, with the DVS deadline fast approaching, and they had several deliveries scheduled for London before the busy December period. Therefore, it was critical to avoid delays that could result in costly fines and penalty charge notices (PCNs).

Initial Steps

At Nationwide Fleet Installations, we pride ourselves on making telematics installation as smooth and stress-free as possible for our clients. United Anodisers provided us with a schedule for their vehicles, details of the safety equipment they needed to be installed, and the availability of their drivers. We managed the entire coordination, ensuring a seamless installation process.

Installation

On the scheduled day, our engineer arrived promptly to install the necessary DVS-compliant technology. The equipment was professionally fitted and calibrated to ensure the camera and radar equipment worked correctly. Additionally, we provided the driver with a clear demonstration of how to use the new systems and how their vehicle would be affected by the additional safety technology. This ensured that United Anodisers’ fleet was fully prepared and compliant ahead of the DVS deadline, allowing them to continue delivering to their London-based customers without disruption.
